Power With not Over

Part 1

POWER – the Daring Topic for July, for all you daring How Dare She followers.

Lets start by saying ‘hello’ to the elephant in the room.

Power, Powerful, Empowered, Womens Empowerment, Empowerment this Empowerment that………..

Yes it could be described and the ‘buzz’ word of this decade and, it associations vary depending on who you speak to and what circumstances they see themselves in.

The concept of power conjures very different meanings for people. For some it has negative connotations; others see it in a positive light.

Everyone of us lives with power every single day; in our personal, family and work lives,  we are consciously and subconsciously negotiating power.

So lets explore what power means to us and gather some tools to become comfortable and empowered about power.

Answer the following questions: (if you can share your thinking with a partner, with the aim to settling on single words which represent power for each of you at the moment)

  1. What does power mean to you?
  2. Who has power over you?
  3. Over whom do you have power?
  4. Around whom do you feel powerful?
  5. Around whom do you feel powerless?
  6. How do you give away your power?

As said above; the concept of power conjures very different meanings for people. For some it has negative connotations; others see it in a positive light.

So in thinking about power we focus our attention in a variety of ways. For example, we may think about:

  • our emotional response
  • the effect it has on us personally
  • the broader consequences, or
  • where it comes from

The focus of this months topic is to develop co-operative power- power with not power over. Together we will examin power relartionships, the bases from which power originates, and personal power- what makes each of us a powerful person.
